Last night, my little girl Quin fell asleep as I was singing to her...a thing that happens fairly often, but it was one of those moments that I paused for a bit extra and watched her sleeping, watched the gentleness of her breathing and the beauty of her and reflected back on her birth.
Mary and I had decided after Gabe was born (with the assistance of a lay midwife) that if we really believed in this vitalistic philosophy that Chiropractic is part of, and if we really wanted to live congruently with the concept of "nature needs no help, just no interference" that the next one(s) ought to be done alone. Unassisted. Just us.
And they were which is another story for another time. In fact the labor for Quin was approximately 1.5 hours from start to finish. (Mary, you can correct me if I'm wrong here, I was a bit groggy) It was just extraordinary...words can't begin to describe it.
And recalling these amazing events in my life only confirmed and strengthened my conviction about what we do as Chiropractors...it only enhanced my belief that the intelligence within is the miracle of our lives. It's not just the birth process, or the sperm finding the egg, or differentiation and specialization, or growth and development...the miracle is everything!
And we get to work with that EVERY SINGLE DAY! Name another profession that is involved in working with Innate Intelligence that often...
You get to do it! You are afforded the privilege to do it! And get paid for it! Wow, right?
Today, spend an extra moment with your patients, with your kids, with your loved ones expressing a deep gratitude for the life you have and the career you have been chosen for.
Did you get that?? YOU were chosen for it...maybe that's the miracle of it all.
So lucky.

Brian,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new born..thats wonderfule news...
But I thought this blog was -
"A blog designed from Life University's business program to help Chiropractors and students become more knowledgeable and effective in their practices."
Also are you currently practicing? If so what are the daily strategies you are implementing to improve your own business in particular.
As future Chiropactors facing a high student default rate and 50% fail rate I think we would be better served by you lightening up on the kool aid drining innate intelligence and focusing more on business strategies.
In response to annonymous...Every single master in any profession will tell you that the philosophy and intention behind the things you do are what make or break you.
ReplyDeleteBy Brian relating the stories he does, and then giving concrete steps to take as well, he is providing people with the tools to decide for themselves who they are and what they want to accomplish. Without those ideas as a solid foundation, anything you "DO" will be only marginally effective.
If we want to keep seeing chiropractors fail in business, all we need to do is keep putting out the same kind of crap every other "business" blog does.
But if we want to see chiropractors flourishing, we all need to spend time getting the kind of info this blog has to offer.
Kevin,

Did we read the same blog dude?
Kevin all due respect but your a perfect example of the problem here on this campus and throughout many parts of chiropractic... Your just another example of completely missing the boat and being naive all the while dancing around with your head in the clouds singing the same old song while the rest of the world laughs at us... I criticized the non applicable direction this blog is taking and you twisted into to the typical "touchy feely" chiropractic nonsense that everyone with a brain in their head is sick of hearing...take your thoughts and go read a blog about innate intelligence and go love it up in there...Here I want to talk business!! Cold hard facts...
Chiropractic needs to toughen up... Starting with this blog...
Lets talk about business and how to market and plan effectively.
Interesting that it is an "anonymous" student that feels like s/he has the knowledge to tell field doctors who have successful practices what's important. For you to "have" first you have to "be" and "do". Brian, and Kevin with his Chirothots newsletters, are providing you the basis to BE a better person and Chiropractor. As that person you will flavor your actions, your DO, and then you will HAVE more than you ever thought was possible. It is not the $ and volume that will make you happy. Even that is what you may think while you are still in school. it is the intangibles... like the someone who suddenly hears, a mom telling you their infant was able to eat and sleep for the first time is weeks, or the teenager who has had less than a dozen fevers in his life (especially when it's your kid).
ReplyDeleteThanks all for your commentary...I agree with anonymous that my posts tend to be on the soft-skills side of business, which as Kevin and Alan have alluded to are hugely important in business...and I also agree that the hard-skills needs to be covered as well - look for them in future posts. Thanks!
ReplyDeletethanks for taking note Brian...look forwardto reading in the future
ReplyDeleteAlan Lichter... $ may not make me happy but becoming a part of the huge contingency that is failed chiropractors will certainly make me unhappy that I can assure you... I'll look inward to better myself Alan.. Hopefully LU can focus a bit on what's wrong with the profession rather than chit chatting about how beautiful life is..
Could the above succesful field doctors give us a glimpse into their practice? Are they actually practicing, if so why coach? It doesn't add up..
Hopefully this post goes thru as this an educational environment where thoughts and discussions are suposed to be exchanged
But, anonymous, if you (and Life University) focus on "what's wrong with the profession"then you will bring more of 'what's wrong' into your world, and Life's. If, instead, you note what is 'wrong,' but then focus on and give your attention to what is possible and what you would like to see in your profession, you are much more likely to get just that. While I'm not saying to ignore what you feel needs to be changed, I am warning you to be extremely careful of where you are focusing your attention. Complaining and attacking is making you come off as a bittered and disgruntled student who may just need to rethink your profession or choice of schools.
ReplyDeleteJust saying...
Where the head goes...the body will follow. Anyone can point out a problem, but only a select few will rise to the challenge to make corrections.
ReplyDeleteI thought this blog was beautiful, inspirational and a great reminder to take that extra moment with each patient to connect with them, and express gratitude. There is no better marketing tip for keeping the patients you have worked so hard to gain than to truly appreciate and acknowledge them.
When we realize that patients have literally hundreds of choices when it comes to their health, we should ackowledge that they have wisely chosen Chiropractic - and equally as important, that they've chosen us as their Chiropractor. It is easy to count our patients as just ONE of a thousand that you will see this week or this month. But to that patient, you are THE ONE.
Brian's blog was a personal story that could easily help any Chiropractor be more effective in practice and I certainly enjoyed the message.
